Project 2: Pennhurst Asylum
partner project with Caitlin Smith
For the art piece, we created a clay sculpture and a Popsicle wheelchair of a patient that would have been in Pennhurst. We researched and talked to people that were in mental hospitals to help create an accurate presentation of them. Using clay, acrylic paint, spray paint and finishing it off with a gloss we created our final product of a patient from Pennhurst.

For our English part of the project, we created a short transcript from the trials. There is three different perspectives in the transcript. The first and main character being a patient named Maria Lopez. The second and third perspective are her parents Diana and Juan Lopez. It shows the perspective of when Maria was in Pennhurst and then during the trials that closed it. It shows her emotions and feelings towards Pennhurst. She talks about what abuse and neglect goes on inside. The parents perspectives are talking about when their children went to Pennhurst, thinking it was a good idea. They talk during the court trial to explain why the kids were sent there.

For our history part of this project we created a 3D walk through exhibit. There are 9 different paragraphs and a picture to go with them. The paragraphs are written from a Pennhurst patients view. It focuses on all the bad aspects of Pennhurst rather than the very few good ones. The patients view is negative to all the different parts of the horrible place.
